More than a greeting card
Greeting cards get read once, propped on a shelf for a week, then recycled. A message hidden inside a puzzle is different. They have to build their way to it.
The assembly takes about 15–30 minutes. During that time, they're wondering what the QR code is going to reveal. By the time they scan it, the anticipation makes whatever you wrote feel like a real moment.
What people write
There's no wrong answer. People use secret message puzzles for:
Love notes
"I know you hate surprises, so I made one you can't avoid." Anniversary, Valentine's, or just because — a message with some mystery behind it.
Invitations
Wedding party proposals, vacation reveal ("pack your bags — we're going to Italy"), or birthday dinner details they have to earn.
Inside jokes & callbacks
"Remember when you said you'd never eat sushi? You ordered two rolls last night." Or a quote from a show you both watched, a photo from a trip, a reference nobody else would get. The puzzle format makes it feel like a private exchange.
Apologies & real talk
Sometimes you need to say something that's hard to say out loud. Writing it down and putting it inside a puzzle gives the other person space to read it on their own terms, without the pressure of a face-to-face conversation.
Setting up a secret message puzzle
Write your message
This is what appears when they scan the completed QR code. There's no hard character limit — write a sentence or a few paragraphs. You can also attach a photo or video if you want to pair it with visuals.
Add a note in the box (optional)
Write something like "Solve me" or "This is for your eyes only" on the printed gift note. It goes in the box with the unassembled puzzle and sets the mood before they start.
They solve, scan, read
The pieces assemble into a working QR code. They point their phone at it, and your message appears on a private reveal page with a unique URL.
You can update the message anytime
Every puzzle comes with a private manage link. Use it to rewrite the message, change the photo, or upload a video — even months later. The physical QR code stays the same; only the content behind it changes.
This also means you can reuse the puzzle. Passed it along to someone new? Just update the message to fit the new recipient.
Questions about secret message puzzles
How long can my message be?
There's no hard character limit. Write a sentence or write a few paragraphs — whatever fits the moment.
Can I add a photo or video too?
Yes. You can upload a photo or a short video that appears alongside your text message on the reveal screen.
Is the message private?
The message appears on a private reveal page with a unique URL. Anyone with the QR code or reveal link can open it, so share the puzzle with the intended recipient.
Can they reply to the message?
The reveal page is one-way — they see your message, but there's no reply mechanism built in. If you want a conversation, include your contact info in the message.
Got something to say?
Write it down and hide it inside a puzzle. They'll never see it coming.
